Responding to the "FFs"

In a letter found in today's Laconia Daily Sun, a Jeff Madon, apparently writing for "The Gilford Professional Firefighters", claims to be disturbed about
"looming salary and benefit cuts."
He then threatens that public safety will be adversely affected by
"those that are intent on slashing budgets and demeaning experienced fire department staff."
I think that if Mr. Madon were to review the tapes of the MBC meetings, he will find that nobody demeaned anybody--- unless one were to count what was said TO the MBC FROM the FFs and their supporters. As far as "slashing" budgets goes, really Mr. Madon... "slashing"? Pardon me while I catch my breath, after the hearty laughter that one brings!
.
Please sir, get your stories straight. If you did your homework, you might find that the issue of "civility" is one that best be left to rest, lest the townsfolk at large find out the truth about who's been civil, and who hasn't...

January 09, 2007

It's not football. It's much deeper than that.

For everybody who's worked into a tizzy over the football issue, I have some good advice: Calm down! Stop. Breathe in deep. Exhale slowly. Repeat.
.
The issue at hand, as has been said ad-nauseum, is not about whether the townsfolk want and like football. It is simply about people keeping their word. I will not repeat the entire debate here again-- you can scroll down and read the previous postings on the matter. In short, three years back, many well-respected people, in concert with our elected representatives, said that this wasn't going to cost the taxpayers any money. If it ever did, they would let the whole town decide. Period.
.
Watching school board members, administrators, and certain leaders of the football organization engage in verbal gymnastics in their attempts to weasel out of earlier promises made has been a sad sight indeed. What we really have here is an assault on the very essence of self-government: honesty and people honoring their given word. Go figure.

Deb LaLibertie - Gilford Steamer Letter of 11.21

Well, Ms. LaLibertie lays it all out right from the get-go, doesn't she?  With a title of

Disgusted with Gilford’s Budget Committee

I can see where this is going, quickly.  Well, since she has taken the time to write, I shall reply.  The only caveat, as in any Post here at GilfordGrok, I am speaking for me and not necessarily for the Budget Committee ("BudComm") as a whole (that only comes from the BudComm Chair).

Enough is enough. At what point will certain members of the Gilford Budget Committee realize their role in town government? At what point will our town Selectmen reign in these members?

And this is exactly the point, and she has it exactly backwards. Without going into the RSAs, here is the lesson - the Board of Selectmen ("BOS") sets policy and is responsible for overall management of the Town, holding the Town managment and employees accountable and they themselves are accountable to the voters.

The BudComm is separate from and is not accountable  to the BOS - only to the taxpayers.  We take the budget prepared by the BOS, analyze and make changes to it, and then present our version to the taxpayers (not to the BOS).

As opposed to what Ms. LaLibertie believes, the taxpayers will tell the BudComm their desires by either voting for or against the budget we present.  The BOS has no role in this process (excepting the BOS representative to the BudCOmm - which is Connie Grant at this time [and for whom I have had  nothing but admiration during this process]).

So Ms. LaLibertie, seeing that you have not done your homework, I hope this helps to shed light on how this piece of your local government operates.  If you review this, you can see my thoughts on the BOS in this process so far.

People who live in Gilford choose to do so because they want a certain quality of life. We live in Gilford because it is one of the most amazing communities in America. We need only to look around us to see the many fine qualities that our town boasts. We enjoy services and community benefits that are unmatched in our region, and an idyllic setting that affords us opportunities every day that other people enjoy only a week or two at a time on vacations.

I agree with this totally!  The problem, and it is a serious one, is that the cost of having this is out of line with the overall median income of the town families.  Click on Statistics to your right and review the tables.

And yet, given the recent actions of the Budget Committee, I am certain this quality of life is quietly being eroded. As evidenced at the meeting on Tuesday, some members of the committee are hastily and aggressively cutting budgets and programs without looking at the long term effects. They are arbitrarily making decisions that are not in the best interest of the town, but rather meeting their own personal agendas.

Boy, this will take some time.....

First, there is nothing quiet about this.  The Citizen, the Daily Sun, and the Gilford Steamer all have been reporting on this year's budget process.  Plus, listen to the radio show "Meet The New Press" (airing on WEMJ 1490 AM, Saturdays from 2-4pm and podcasts here) - the budget process is discussed most broadcasts.

Fact is, I invite you to come into the studio - we are a "no sandbag zone" - no monologues allowed, but we do look for civilized discussions.  We do disagree with you, but you can try to persuade us otherwise - or at least, listen to us.

Teacher Sex Assault Discussion Continues...

Discussion of former Gilford teacher guilty of sexually assaulting a student some 6 years ago at the Gilford Middle High School continues.
.
I first wrote on the topic after the story broke. You can click here for my original piece. Then a letter appeared in the Citizen penned by William Zeckhausen. Click here to read it. Skip responded with a piece posted on our sister site, granitegrok.com. You can read it by clicking here. On August 10th, Alec O'Meara of the Gilford Steamer weighed in on with the weekly editorial. He has forwarded it here to GilfordGrok to add to the mix...
Up on your Nabokov by Alec O'Meara- Editor, The Gilford Steamer
Doug Lambert is right. Well, check that. He’s almost right; we’ll give him that. Lambert, a member of the Gilford Budget Committee and longtime local columnist, recently wrote about the sentencing of former middle school teacher Matt McGonagle. In his column, he raises some interesting questions. He also raises some we disagree completely with, namely insinuating that a cover-up occurred so that the school could continue raising taxes and avoid bad press. We don’t think that’s the case here.
.
Obviously, if there had been a cover-up, that is very serious business. In this particular case, were there both teachers and students at the time who knew something was up, but never went to authorities? It is a fair question, but since the entire administration of the middle school, high school, and SAU office has turned over since the incident, the question lacks the explosive implications it would have had otherwise.
.
However, here’s a much more interesting question that is still in the ballpark of Lambert’s comments: how much of a role does gender play in how we all react to these cases?  More specifically, would that courtroom have been as full of friends and family supporting McGonagle if this had been about a 14-year-old boy instead of a girl? Would there have been as many “blind eyes” back in 2000? Does he get two years? What if he was black, or Hispanic? What happens then?

The Blame Game

There have been murmurings from the readership of this Citizen that there has to be a ceasefire in the current conflict between Israel and Hezbullah, especially the Letter from Mary Vaiden (7/28/06). I do not speak specifically for the Citizen, but I do feel that she is wrong when she states that we are “stubbornly defending Israel's right to bomb civilian infrastructures.” No, we defend the right of a sovereign nation-state, Israel, to defend itself against a terrorist organization, Hezbullah. That group established itself within a weak nation-state, Lebanon and hijacked Lebanon's foreign policy by waging war on Israel by itself without the consent of the host Lebanese government. Its self-proclaimed end point is nothing less the destruction of Israel (similar to that of Hamas in Gaza).

The highest duty of a nation-state is to protect its citizens. Hezbullah, not the US or Israel, should be the target of your scorn, for it was those state-less terrorists that crossed the sovereign border of Israel and killed its citizens and kidnapped two more. I take it that you believe that Israel should have just ignored this attack and allow this to happen? Do you even recognize the ramifications of the word “sovereign” in this event?

I take it that you do not support the right of Israel to defend itself?
