Gilford Republicans elect Chair, participate in straw poll.

On Tuesday evening, a small group of Republicans here in Gilford gathered to reconstitute the town party committee. GilfordGrok's very own Skip Murphy was chosen as the Chair, having been nominated by our state Rep. Chuck Clark. In addition to words by former (and future) NH Cong. Jeb Bradley, Belknap County GOP Chair Frank Tilton, and House Minority Leader Mike Whalley, attendees participated in a surprise straw poll. Below is the ballot as it was given. Does it mean anything at all? Well, we are talking about registered, voting Republicans. Are they the so-called "base"? Based on conversations with those in attendance, I can report that illegal immigration was definitely on several persons' minds as they pondered the Republican field:

What does it all mean? Whatever the choices of 11 Republicans in a small town in Central NH were thinking as of this week. Nothing more. Hmmm. Newt?

T-Bones - glad they came!

TMEW and I went to a new restaurant this past week in Laconia,NH called TBones.  A NH based chain, they have quite a menu - and had my favorite on it.

Now, I have traveled a lot for business over the years and eaten in almost all parts of the country; I'm also partial to Prime Rib.  Well, I have to admit - probably the BEST I have ever had; it was like buddah (that's butter to you non-Bawhstonians).  Tender, cooked exactly right....not much more I could ask for.  Only in Ruth Chris Steak House have I had better - but I have paid the price for it too!

Now, am I shilling?  Naw - when I think a meal is above and beyond, I thank the wait staff (and leave a 20% tip).  And I have been known to ask for the manager to tell the kitchen staff "Thanks!" in the past as well (and I did here).  I told her that I was quite delighted with the meal that I'd talk about it on Meet The New Press and a post here at the 'Grok.

Once again, a great meal!

And here is what we talked about on Meet The New Press this past Saturday about T-Bones

Memorial Day-- Blessing of the Flags

flags
.
.
On Memorial Day, Monday, the Blue Star Mothers of New Hampshire will be holding a “Blessing of the Flags” ceremony at Veterans Square in Laconia starting at 6:00pm. Fr. Adrien Longchamps, Pastor of Sacred Heart Church, will be blessing American flags bearing the names of NH’s fallen soldiers from the current war. They will then be handed out to those in attendance. Following a prayer by Fr. Adrien, and a reading of the Gold Star Mothers poem, the names of the soldiers will be announced one at a time. As each is read, persons holding the matching flag will step forward and placing them in front of the WWII Memorial. This service is open to the public. Come and join the Blue Star Mothers in remembering our fallen heroes.

“No one desires peace as much as those who have had to engage in war. As we honor those who serve our nation in the armed forces, and mourn the passing of those who have died in its service, we also pray for the coming of the day when armed conflicts will give way to a world in which we are all able to live together in peace.” --by Anita Wagner, National 3rd Vice President of Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.

Breaking News!!!!

police picket line
Let loose the union cry: "Less work, more pay!"
.
Sources inform GilfordGrok that members of the Gilford police department are planning to unionize. I view this as not necessarily a bad thing-- after all, the taxpayers will get to say "yes" or "no" to any contract in the privacy of the voting booth. I'll bet voters will not be receptive to any contract that continues to provide 100% health care benefits AND big raises, and anything else that they manage to stick in there. If I were a Gilford cop, I think I'd look at the possibilities of what could happen, and probably conclude that the present system is pretty good-- the Selectmen are usually rather generous and tend to take for the needs of the town's employees over those of the taxpayers.
.
Presently, salaries and benefits are buried and scattered throughout the entire budget--just imagine all those little clauses and bennies published as one single piece for all to see before voting day...

Was Article 30 only a feelgood measure? I hope not. Let's get going!

No SUVs!
Will Gilford put its money where its mouth (vote) is?
.
It seems like an eternity since the March elections and I thought this might be a good time to remind the voters of an important issue. Remember Warrant Article #30? This would be the resolution on climate change. A majority of voters approved this measure to send our leaders a message to act on reducing carbon emissions. It also stated that Gilford would create a committee to reduce energy use and save taxpayer money.
.
In the absence of any action on this issue I thought I’d make a couple of suggestions to further the cause.
.
While standing outside the polls at the middle/high school, I happened to notice a steady flow of SUVs coming to pick up their children. This resulted in a lot of near empty school busses sitting at the school, burning up the fossil fuels for the sake of transporting a few students. Not to mention that all those SUVs arriving to pick up just one child each. I would propose that we make the school zone a NO SUV ZONE. This proposal should be widely accepted because it is already a no gun or drug zone for equally important reasons. Additionally, students should be required to ride the busses. We pay good money for them to be emitting all that Carbon so they ought to be full of students.
.
The next action item is to have several windmills placed on top of our surrounding mountains. We are blessed with high windy peaks that would produce good quantities of electricity. I think about 20 of the big 100 foot blade types would do the trick.
.
These are just two simple ideas that we could initiate immediately to start saving money and reduce carbon emissions. We aren’t the kind of community that simply believes that this is someone else’s problem. The majority of voters didn’t approve this resolution so that we could simply sleep better at night. Let’s get to work and make a difference!

Let's put 'em up at Gunstock NOW!

Another example of why Gilford beats Laconia...

take away the money
.

Thus, after about five minutes, ended the public hearing on the $53,686,000 municipal budget, of which $35 million would need to be raised by taxes.

Say what you will about the occasional "rough and tumble" of Gilford politics, but the above statement is a sad commentary on the sense of interest on the part of the Lake City's taxpaying citizens. This is not to crank on the one or two that have fought the good fight in past years, but was there NOBODY with even a question about ANYTHING of any substance?

Fundraising develops community, too. Why bother, if the taxpayers will pay?

hockey
.
I couldn’t help but notice the ongoing debate in the Shaker Regional School district to consider funding the Gilford-Belmont varsity hockey team. The Gilford-Belmont hockey team has been successfully operating even long than the Gilford football program. Let me begin by stating that I am a huge fan of both hockey and football so obviously I am very supportive of these teams competing at the varsity level. My sons played these sports under the direction of the same people being associated with these sports today. That said, I have my concerns about funding them through taxpayer dollars.
.
The initial sales pitch for these programs goes like this; the money is placed in the budget on the spending side and the revenues that have always been raised by fundraisers and volunteer workers will replace the taxpayer’s money. In some cases, bold promises are made by unaccountable individuals to actually guarantee the money will be raised. These folks are never available when these revenue expectations don’t materialize. I vividly recall the Gunstock director claiming that if the new high speed quad didn’t pay for itself, he would make up the difference. I don’t see that happening and he’s accountable! Is it any wonder why citizens are skeptical about these things? I think we can find plenty of rich history that would lead us to believe that fundraising activities dramatically diminish when the money is already available. There is absolutely zero reason why a public budget needs to be established if the organization is operating as it should be. In fact, these programs always seem to continue on long after public funding is denied.
.
Since these programs have proven they can successfully fund themselves then why would we create a problem were none exist? Let the school provide the vehicle for these programs to operate but let the booster clubs continue to fund them. That was the spirit that involved parents, school, children and community, that I enjoyed most when my kids played.

Analytically Speaking - The Gilford Channel

They said no. Good for them!

No, I'm not talking about the Selectmen's decision to not allow the Firemen apply for a grant for the exercise equipment (although I do agree with the decision). Sometimes, you just find out the darndest things after one of Gilford's meetings (in this case, the organizational meeting for the Budget Committee and an informal discussion with Debra Shackett, the Assistant Town Administrator).

As during the end of the budget season last year, the campaign and election season just completed, discussion swirled around the topic of civility and free speech – what was allowable, or reasonable, or not. While the debate will continue, many agreed that limiting speech is not the answer – MORE speech is. I concur – the more, the better! And if more ways to distribute that speech, better still.

Yet, few were there to personally witness this give and take. In fact, other than other Gilford officials and the press, I only saw one person from “the public” in attendance. For a Committee that generated so much controversy last year, I was rather surprised. I had expected to see many more come to the meeting to see for themselves how members comported themselves.

We have the local press (which pretty much do a stand up job in reporting on all sides of the issues). And, obviously, GilfordGrok. Add to that, Dale Dormody will be launching a new site to report on the goings on in town. Also discussed was Doug Lambert's and my offer to live stream the audio from Budget Committee via GilfordGrok so that those that could not (or chose not to) attend the meetings in person could listen over the Internet (yet to be approved).

When it comes down to it, the more ways that news and opinions can be distributed, the better! Never one to accept what only one news or commentary outlet tells me, I try to sample as many sources to figure out what is flash and what is real. While it takes more time, it is time well spent, as one can only be more well informed as a result.

However, back to the original point. I started by commenting about a little known decision by the Town's Administration - to not give up our cable channel. Huh? Gilford has a cable channel? Yes siree Bob, we do! The operative phrase is “spank 'em when they're wrong, and thank 'em when they're right”. In this case, two big thumbs up for the Town Administration on this decision!

No, our channel is not being used, and no, you cannot find it on your Metrocast set top box – yet. One of the reasons that you do not see Gilford activities on the cable system is that we do not posses the broadcast equipment to do so. According to Ms. Shackett, other towns are broadcasting events, but they obtained their equipment by trading something in return back to Metrocast – their channel. A mighty valuable commodity called bandwidth to a cable company (more channels means more potential profit). And with the forfeiture of that channel, they have lost, perhaps for good, a direct outlet that could be used for their town and by their citizens. Now those Towns have to rely on the Public Access Channel scheduling. For example, if Gilford had that equipment last year, much of the buzz and accusations that Gilford read and talked about the BC might have never happened – from the comfort of their living rooms, Gilfordites could have watched the proceedings and made up their own minds. Not then, and not right now, but the potential is there.

Now, for some of you, this is nothing but a yawner. For others, this may be setting off fireworks inh your heads with ideas of what might be possible. When the time is right and when all of the funds have been obtained, our channel will be there for those ideas to come to fruition.

You have heard Evans Juris stating that we still need more money still to purchase the equipment. I urge you all to donate to get the “Gilford Channel” up and running.

Personally, I see this as another way for the citizens of Gilford to truly see what happens at meetings that affect your lives and those of your families. For if you cannot get to the meeting in person, you'll be able to attend, not with a click of a mouse, but with a click on the remote. Join the fun, and see what really goes on.

And if you are thinking such, the answer is no. I have a face for blogs, columns, and radio.....and that's enough for me (and probably you too!).

A twofer!

Instead of wasting $30,500 of "homeland security" money purchasing commercial laundry equipment and personal finess trainers and exercise equipment, I think there are some low cost alternatives that the town can consider. Let's do the right thing, first of all, and say NO to the taking of monies from our fellow Americans and pretending it's something it's really not.
.
Following that, we can track down the fellow who invented this dual-use piece of equipment that kills two birds with one stone...

Free Speech in abundance!

Cutter Mitchell has an interesting article in today's Citizen about the role of technology, the Internet, and the Blogosphere in local government-- the budget committee in particular. For those that are uptight about the views and opinions expressed here at GilfordGrok, the answer is not to curtail what WE are saying. Indeed, the answer is another blog! As usual, the ultimate answer to the exercise of free speech, and that which makes some uncomfortable is just that... more speech! Click here to read the piece.
