Kayaking in The Meadows: UPDATE

Dan Murphy kayaks in the Meadows April 16, 2007.
.
.
Once again, big rains have flooded The Meadows fields. While I have personally witnessed this many times, this is the first time with video camera in-hand. And it's the first time I've watched someone kayak in the fields. Of the millions to be spent constructing elaborate playing fields, how much will be needed for drainage and water control?

Enjoy the video...

Interesting video, you neglected to pan over to the football field which was high and dry due to the fact that it was set up with a crown and drainage. The area you video taped was the lower part of the meadows down by the drainage ditch coming from the other side of the road where the Beans and Greens fields are. And another important fact you neglected to mentioned is that most kayaks drawn only a couple of inches of water at most and it appears that your son had trouble navigating between the two puddles. Which means the water in the meadows wasn't really that deep. I believe if you take your video camera and go to the meadows today you will find a lot less water. I also realize I am wasting my time posting this comment to your blog, because I hardly ever see any comments on your blogs and never anything that disagrees with you. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK... at least in your eyes.

If that "puddle" was on your property, it woulld be classified as "wetlands" or "floodplane" and you wouldn't be allowed to do much with it. I don't want to spend tax $$ to construct, or, in the event of some other "free" gift, maintain another town owned dollar sinkhole. As to the publishing of comments, you type 'em, we'll post 'em-- (unless inappropriate). As we've ALWAYS said...

I think that most people know that kayaks draw very little water. However, if you watch the video carefully, his paddle does submerge into the water....there were places where it was over a foot deep. Yes, there were places much less than that and he did have trouble....the video shows it plainly with no effort to hide anything.

To mitigate the amount of flooding that the Meadows experienced will not cheap. The overall question to be answered, and I hope by a full vote of the taxpayers, is the cost worth the benefit?

Simple question, with a simple answer (yes or no).

It's unfortunate that we can't have any real debate in Gilford. The argument is always emotional rehtoric with NO rational thinking. Seriously, No one in their right mind would build anything down there. The best anyone could hope for at the meadows would be practice fields. A "real" good playing field would be best inside the running track at the High School. BUT.... it's Gilford. Let's not do anything like every other community. That would make sense. The Gilford "experts" know what's best. just like they did when they made class rooms with no walls!
