FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Again, thanks for coming to GilfordGrok!  You've come here to get an answer to a question; hopefully it is here, but if not, send us an email! We will add it.

First, why is the word email in red and underlined?

This is a "hyperlink" - by clicking on it you will either be brought to a new web page (either within GilfordGrok or somewhere that we think will be informative) or do something (the email above will allow you to send an email to us.  If you have clicked on it, the color will change to a green (showing that you've "been there" before).

How is this Blog arranged?

This blog is oriented around Posts and Comments on different subjects, topics, and ideas concerning Gilford.

What is a Post (or Posting)?

A Post is an entry or an article.  If you arrived here by typing in www.GilfordGrok.com into your browser' address bar, the Posts are what you see in the middle column.  These are the things that people are interested in and hope you want to read and then comment on.

Think of them as a conversation starter; a main idea.

How does that differ from a Comment?

If the Post starts the conversation, Comments keep the conversation going.

If you have selected an individual Post, you will see the Comments (if there are any) at the end of the Post.

How do I navigate around?

When you first arrive at GilfordGrok, you see the title banner at the top with three columns underneath.

Left Column: Links, lots of links.

The "squares" (e.g., About the blog, et al) will bring you to different things if you click on them.

Below that are links (anything that is underlined can be clicked on to go somewhere else) that pertain to "stuff" in Gilford (links to the town departments and elected officials, politicians, new sources, and of course, other local blogs).

Middle Column: the Posts

These are the heart of GilfordGrok!  Each will have a given topic (although multiple Posts can talk about the same topic).  Sometimes, there is more to the Post than what is displayed on this Home page.  When you see this:

and click on it, you will go to a page dedicated to that single Post.  This is done so that multiple Posts can better fit on the Home page without boring you.

You may also see this:

| Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

This is information about the Post:

The Author of the Post is SKIP, and was

Published at 06:01 AM today.

The PERMALINK (if you click on it) will bring you to the page dedicated to just this Post

COMMENTS (0) will bring you to the bottom of that dedicated Post so that you can enter a Comment of your own.  In this example, the (0) means that no one has entered a comment just yet.  If it was COMMENTS (12), it would mean that 12 comments have already been left discussing this Post (by one or most people - you can put in a comment multiple times).

TRACKBACK (0) will show how many other blog sites (in this case, none yet - see Comments) have referenced this Post and are commenting on its idea but doing so on their blog.  Generally, you don't have to worry about them, but if you click on it, and then on a Trackback, you will be brought to their site to see what they have written either about this Post or a given Comment.

Right Column

This has tools to get around GilfordGrok a bit faster:

SEARCH - does exactly what it means.  Put in some words, click on SEARCH, and the results will display the Posts that contain those words.

CATAGORIES - when a "poster" writes a Post, s/he can associate one or more keywords with that Post.  The Catagories that are underlined , when clicked, will bring you to the Posts associated with that Catagory

ARCHIVES - organize the Posts via chronological order.  Right now, we are organized by Month within a given year.

RECENT POSTS - is a quick listing of the most recent pages.

How do I leave a Comment?

Click on the COMMENT at the bottom of the Post or click on the PERMALINK and scroll down to the bottom.  You will be asked to put in:

NAME - Put in your name here - or if you want to be anonymous, put something else in.  We use our real names, but that is up to you.

EMAIL ADDRESS - we would like to see a real email address in case we need to contact you for whatever reason (e.g., asking you to edit your comment just a bit to remove that naughty word).  We are more apt to publish a comment with an email address that works than one that doesn't if the Comment is "iffy"

REMEMBER PERSONAL INFORMATION - if you check this off, it will fill in these fields automatically after the first time (and your browser has cookies enabled).

COMMENT - put in your response to the Post or any other Comment.

Why doesn't it appear immediately when I am done?

We are moderating Comments to make sure that their content does not "cross the line" (see Policies).  Once you hit POST, it will first store your Comment on the site and then send us an email letting us know that we need to approve it.  Once we approve it, it will appear.

Please note: we do have other-than-blog lives and are married to other people (and not this blog).  We will try to approve all "acceptable" Comments as soon as possible

Acceptable - no naughty words, no libel, flaming, etc. - nothing that will get us sued.  You can disagree with the Post - THAT will NEVER keep a Comment from being approved (but the way you do so might!).

Now I that know about Posts and Comments, how can I Comment on something that doesn't exist?  Can I create a Post?

I'm working on it....for right now, just send us an email here.

We will then post it for you.  What we will need is a name to post it under (and yes, although we prefer real names, we understand that some wish to be anonymous.  We may REPLY to your email if your requested Post needs some help / editing / spelling / clarity assistance.
